TalkAbout Film Series: Transamerica

Friday, October 13, 7:00 p.m.

The road movie is always about transformation by way of transportation and Transamerica is firmly in the genre. Felicity Huffman's 'Bree', who is in the mid-stream of a gender change, is also undergoing an evolution of the spirit. Even though s/he expects that the operation will be the remedy to the pain s/he feels at being born into the wrong skin, her past, in the form of a teenaged son of whom s/he was unaware, forces Bree to accept herself in all her manifestations and to risk sharing all of that with her estranged family.

You've got to pick up every stitch. Bree and her son (Kevin Zegers) travel across America and bind up the raveled threads of their lives in this tender, funny and deeply compassionate film, director Duncan Tucker's first full-length feature. Bree is never seen as a freak or a comic character but rather as a fully human being caught up in the transformation that anyone who ever dared to be completely authentic has experienced. Huffman is masterful at playing a man becoming a woman. Her acting is always transparent and a good, veteran supporting cast keeps it real throughout.

There is dark humor, absurdity, pathos, awkwardness, sleaze, anguish, laughter, danger, rage, humiliation and hope along the way as these two grope their way toward acceptance, if not acceptability. This is a movie for anyone who knows that 'normal' is a construct of convention and that what's normal and universal is the arc, and the ache, of the growth of the soul.

As you can imagine there also are 'adult situations', nudity, drug use and colorful language in this film. It is rated 'R' for Real.

As always, contributions toward the refreshments are welcome and childcare is provided as needed. Please contact Katie O'Keeffe (452-0395) to request childcare. See you there!
