Office Hours: Tuesday and Friday, 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Sunday 9:00 AM to 1:00 PMOur Religious Education department is made up of one part time Director, volunteer teachers for each unit, and the RE committee. We are always looking for some new volunteers to help teach our children our UU principles and beliefs!
For information about current happenings in Religious Education, read the monthly column in the Beacon newsletter, Religious Education Reflections.
Our Youth Religious Education Program is a cooperative venture, completely dependent upon the participation of parents and other members of the church community. Parents are expected to help in some way each year that their child is in attendance. If you are uncertain as to how you can contribute, please see our Director of Religious Education, or any member of the UUFW Youth Religious Education Committee. Volunteers need not be parents…we welcome single adults and grandparents, too!
This year, we are continuing our focus on Unitarian Universalism and our Seven Principles.
Age 3 through K-5: Our preschool children will use a locally written curriculum based on children's literature from a variety of cultures and traditions. Activities based on books and other stories will include discussions and creative arts (visual arts, music, dramatic play) to explore how we live in our world with other people and our natural environment. Children and parents are welcome to suggest favorite books and activities.
Grades 1 and 2: Experiences with the Web of Life--this program uses hands-on experiences to learn about our spiritual connections with all living things.
Grades 3-5: Spirit of Adventure--this curriculum approaches our Principles and Purposes through various aspects of our lives, including sports, food, science, building, exploring and the Web of Life.
Grades 6-8: Fall: The Gospel According to the Simpsons, Spring: Messages in Music. The Gospel According to the Simpsons--a wonderful, engaging curriculum where the class watches all or part of a Simpsons episode, then they discuss the spirituality in the episode and how it relates to our Principles. Messages in Music--this uses contemporary music to compare and contrast with the Principles and Purposes and how they are expressed and violated in our society.
Grades 9-12: Popcorn Theology--this class will watch movies, or excerpts from movies, to explore issues of theology and ethics.
